Researchers can choose from tens of thousands of scholarly journals to disseminate their research results. It's not always easy to find out which ones are reliable.

Peer-reviewed Open Access Journals are usually as reliable as typical toll access journals. However, asking for Article Processing Charges (APCs) is an attractive business model that tempts some online publishers to fraud. So-called predatory journals want to gain money from authors without providing the services promised, i.e. peer-review, safeguarding research integrity or disseminating the publication via suited channels. Ghent University advises her researchers not to respond to these journals' requests to publish, review or advertise, and to do an extra quality check on these journals' publications when they are listed in a CV.
